To A Zheng Player
(Sung Dynasty Poem)
All my life I have been indifferent to most things,
But now I fain would be transformed into a Zheng.
For thus I would be near to the slender fingers of the lovely maiden,
And, resting on her smooth silk lap, sing sweet melodies.

Lang Tao Sha
Ocean Waves Wash Away The Sand

Lang means the waves on water, Sha means sand,
and Tao means the movement
of filtering sand
through water, like the movement of filtering
gold from sand.
There are several poems to this
tune. One is by Xin Qiji of the Song dynasty
about the Three Kingdoms near the Yangtze River.
One line translates as
"Bygones have become vague
but human feelings remain unchanged. Still so
deep
are the tear stains on the bamboo of Xiang'e."
An interpretation of the theme:
Many
heros and events come and go repeatedly like the
sand on the beach.
Imagine yourself with a cup of
wine in your hand, watching the sunset and
thinking about the past and the heroic events that
many generations have gone
through. The mountains
and the sunset remain the same. Right or wrong,
success
or failure, ultimately everything turns
into emptiness. What's left are the laughter
and
discussion, gossip, rumors and stories while people
drink and talk in the afternoon...
